I was going to try, very, very hard to write a post a day until I had completed the Japan trip, but life just got in the way.
Also, Siena wanted me to point out that she took 90% of the photos I am using and she would have appreciated some credit. Sheesh, teenagers!
Anyway, here we are in Hiroshima. We took another shinkansen from Kyoto to Hiroshima for a 2 day stay. I wanted to visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial site and also to visit Miyajima.
This amazing photo is a sculpture of the exact time (8:15am) when the atomic bomb was dropped. All around the clock is rubble from the bomb site, having been preserved for the memorial site.
It's hard to describe the atmosphere of the park. Hiroshima was hot and humid and inside the park there was no shade or relief from the heat, you just had to stand and take it in, heat and all. Maybe it was intentionally not a cool and tranquil rest stop for a picnic or a snooze, the stark and relentless space made me feel vulnerable and quite emotional.
The only building to survive the bomb is preserved. We walked past this building again at night after dinner and it was so eerie, again the photos on my tablet are proving hard to transport (?) to the blog in normal size. I really hope to get that sorted because I have some amazing photos on there.
