This day...

...is significant. My father in law is undergoing open heart surgery to replace his calcified aortic valve. I have been told this is quite a simple procedure (sounds so un-simple to me) and to his benefit he is so healthy and fit that a full recovery is expected. He went in this morning so I am not sure how he is doing, hopefully we will get an update soon.

On this day 2 years ago Eva underwent her first open heart surgery. Her surgery was to patch a hole (she had 2). She also has a narrowed aortic arch and mitral valve regurgitation (these people and their valves huh!!).

Unfortuantely Eva arrested about 5 hours after surgery, she was in an abnormal heart rhythm and needed to be defibrilated she also was placed on an ECMO machine (a heart bypass machine) for 3 days to try and give her a heart a chance of recovery.

I know this picture is shocking, it still makes my heart miss a beat and a pang of fear go through my belly, but let me tell you, I dropped Evie off at family day care today and watched her run and play and generally look and act like a normal 2 year old.

What a big day for your family. Hopefully everything goes as planned for your FIL's operation. That is an incredible picture of Eva... I can hardly fathom all those tubes! What a miracle that little girl is! (*I like your new banner!) :)

I hope everything goes well for your father in law. My cousins daughter had heart surgery a few days after she was born because she had a small artery too. She will be three in a few months and is as healthy as can be.

I hope evrything went well for your FIL today.
That picture of Eva is amazing, not just in the way in captures her fragility at the time but as marker to see how far she has come.
I had no idea your little one had been through so much. She really is a miracle girl.

Such a big date. That photo is so powerful. You're an amazing, strong mother, and Evie is so lucky to have you, too.
I'm sure you father-in-law will be a-ok. Keep us posted.

My heart aches when I look at Eva's picture, and try to imagine how you felt. I can't. You are a strong woman, and your family is so blessed to have you. Eva is a little miracle.

My prayers are with your father-in-law and family. :)

Hope your FIL went well, my dad did the same thing. The docs seem so non-plused about it now - it is a little bizarre.
He assured me the tune up didn't hurt but openeing the bonnet was a little sore.
Hats off to your little fighter too! She is super beautiful even with all the cords you can see her in there.

Sorry Soph, i meant to say this morning that this photo is such a confronting (in a good way) reminder of how far Evie has come from just 2 years ago, so so happy and healthy! Glad Tony is doing well too.
Thanks again for this morning, i feel much lighter just talking :)

My baby was sitting on my lap as I read this post and it made me cry to see your baby like that and to imagine what you went through. Not until I had Cohen did I even begin to understand the strength of a mothers love. Best wishes to you and your family.
