what about eva?

Siena asked me the other day why I hadn't posted about Eva in so long. She reminded me that this blog was created not only for me and my interests but to also document Eva's progress and she felt that I wasn't honouring the latter.

It's true, this blog was set up to prompt me to record Eva's achievements and set backs, so that not only our friends and family were able to follow the journey with us but that Eva too could read this when she is bigger to be able to make sense of the bodily scars, the intervention and the visits to doctors that will be for the rest of her life.

The truth is that it's been pretty quiet in terms of Eva's health. She gets sick quite frequently but where once upon a time a runny nose would mean full blown bronchiolitis and hospital for 10 days, a cold can now be managed at home. She used to have physiotherapy every 2 weeks but now that is every 2 months. Her cardiologist vists are twice a year. Today she had some speech therapy and we are working on some hand signs for Eva to use in conjunction with trying to get her to speak more.

I still very much feel traumatised by the events from when she was 3 months to now, but they are dulled somewhat, because of how far she has come and how hopeful the professionals are who care for her. Also, inevitably you get used to things being a certain way, Eva is a little more fragile, we can see the signs now when she is getting sick and Andrew and I automatically work in synchronicity in dealing with her feeds and whatever else needs monitoring. It is just the way life is now. I am completely hopeful that Eva will lead a 'normal' life, she will go to school, have friends, EAT & DRINK, and just be cool with who she is. Completely hopeful.

It is true that things somehow that used to be trying or difficult, become the norm, and we don't notice them the same way anymore. How awesome though that she is doing so much better. The signing is pretty neat - we (I) started with Grace and it is amazing how well it has helped with our communication. She has even invented signs of her very own now which is pretty cool to see. Are there particular signs you are trying to teach Eva?

Hey Carmen, we are teaching her me/mine which is really hitting your chest, and 'more' which is a upside down cupped hand extended from chest outwards. I just learnt today. Eva already uses her hands to say 'come' to me, it's so cute.

That is fantastic you are learning to sign with Eva - it will be great for all of you (& us) to have another way to communicate with her until she starts using her words!!! She is such a precious girl. x
